What is Internet Marketing?

Internet marketing or online marketing, as it is otherwise known, is big business and is becoming an important part of most, if not all, businesses in order to raise the profile of a brand as well as increase sales. This is irrelevant of whether a business is done completely online, partly online, or completely offline.

 Essentially, internet marketing is using the Internet to do one or more of the following:

• Raise the brand  and profile of a company, thus attract more/new customers
• Communicate a company’s message about itself, its products, or its services online.
• Sell goods, services, or advertising space over the Internet.

Key Aspects of Internet Marketing

There are various components of internet marketing but as with anything not all have to be used.

Creating a Website, which is quite easily done these days with the plethora of different systems and applications to assist you, such as WordPress, Squarespace, etc, etc.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM), which is marketing a website online via search engines, either by improving the site’s natural (organic) ranking through search engine optimization (SEO), buying pay-per-click (PPC) ads or purchasing pay-for-inclusion (PFI) listings in website directories, which are similar to offline yellow page listings.

Email Marketing, the online equivalent of direct mail marketing. It is a great way to not only maintain your clientele list but grow it as well, by communicate with them on a regular basis.

Banner advertising, the placement of ads on a website for a fee. The offline equivalent of this form of online marketing would be traditional ads in newspapers or magazines.

Online press releases, involves placing a newsworthy story about a company, its website, its people, and/or its products/services with an online wire service. There are many online PR directories to choose from.

Forum Marketing, the act of posting comments, expressing opinions or making announcements in discussion and group forums, such as Linkedin and Facebook.

Blogging, an excellent way of building a company’s profile as well as illustrating a company’s knowledge on their marketplace. A blog can also be used as a hub to post/archive articles, news, videos and audio recordings pertaining to the company, whilst still utilising the various directories on the internet. This again, helps with the SEO ranking of a website.

Video Marketing, the art of recording a video illustrating your knowledge of your industry, market, product and/or service. Again, there are many video sharing websites, such as Youtube to post the video recording. Classified Marketing, a great way, and generally free, to penetrate a location specific market.

Article Marketing, involves writing articles related to your business and having them published on various syndicated online article sites.

Social Media Marketing, a great marketing strategy to incorporate, in order to socially interact with your clients and marketplace, whilst attracting new customers, by twittering, and using some, if not all, of the other marketing strategies as mentioned above.

Internet marketing is not child’s play, but neither is rocket science.
